Learning to Paint

Learning techniques and collecting ideas using YouTube tutorials. Part of me feels using these tutorials is cheating, they're somebody else's ideas. Another part of me thoroughly enjoys watching the tutorials and using their taught techniques to produce my version of their painting.

Practice Makes Perfect?

It certainly helps. Many tutorials teach the wet on wet technique where you apply (wet) paint to wet paper. The paint comes alive and tends to do it's own thing, spreads itself in a way that is hard to predict, looking both creative and stunning. With the right colours skies are dramatic. There is a skill though, too wet and the paint spreads itself into puddles, too dry and edges appear and you lose the flow effect you're trying to create.
